I really like this app. My suggestion is to play with it a little before you need to use it, so you understand how to work it. Its not hard to figure out, in my opinion, and really easy to use, once you figure it out. You can divide the bill equally, like other programs of this type, or you can tell the program to figure out what each person owes, when they pay for what they ordered.

Works great to settle the bill when it comes. BUT why cant I save items for times when you revisit same places? Just like you save groups. If that was there I would give it. 5 STARS!!!

I love this thing. I emailed support with a suggestion to improve the app, and I got a friendly, timely response. Im not sure why a few people find this app "confusing". It does the job, and its not that hard to figure out. The only thing I would do differently is "add people". I found out I had to add all the people when I entered my first check item. I would change it so people can be added at any point, OR have an order: Add people, add items, split check. Its still a great app, and Im looking forward to future updates.

This app is acutally not bad, it would be nice if you were able to calculate the taxes, based on the rate for your state. I know that I can add the food tax total once I actually get my ticket from the waitress, but I would love the abilbity to break everyones ticket down before the waitress gets back to the table, and to do this I have to go to another app for caluculator to determine what the tax is on the items purchased, then come back to this app and add food tax to the totals. Other than that, its not a bad app.

This is simple and easy to use. Makes splitting up the bill a much less painful. My friends and I usually split the bill equally, but on occasion we do need to separate out some items. For example, if one person had 5 drinks and 4 courses, and someone else only had a salad.

I was using it for the first time and liking it and 2 times it shut off right in the middle. I deleted the app because I dont have the patience for that.

Liked that it can apportion the check fairly, but I do wish one could take off coupons. Maybe it can, but I couldnt find it.

Great app! Does exactly what it says it will... Saves me tons of time and money at check time. On top of that, the customer service is absolutely spectacular! I sent in a complaint and got a response in less than 24 hours and a fix was released very quickly after that. Definitely a must-have app :)

Ive been using Separate Checks since May 2010, when it was still a paid app. It was totally worth the money and has been fantastic! If you dine with groups that order a variety of food and drink, this app will do the work in calculating totals and tips. After entering all the pertinent information from a restaurant bill, there is a summary page that shows everyones totals. Sometimes you have that one friend who says they are putting in $X when they really should be putting in $(X+Y). This creates accountability. Honestly, Im a bit surprised the app is currently free. Hopefully the developers are making money somehow so they can continue future development on this and other projects.

I like this tip calculator, but wished it had a way of calculating tax by %. And if you could input amount each person paid, and what is owed back.

Loved this ap Neil the latest upgrade - now it doesnt work and the instructions are useless. Have to go look for a new one.

This use to be awesome...not its cumbersome. Too many steps required and overly time consuming.

This app used to be amazing. Now it just doesnt work. People are referred to as "tabs" and you cant edit names properly anymore, you cant save groups, you cant edit items names... Every input field is broken and doesnt work. Its just garbage now. Dont update and save you some trouble! Developer, PLEASE, bring the old version back! Your app used to be great. Its just too complicated and tiresome to use now. This was such a massive downgrade...

Most tip calculators/check splitters oversimplify reality and make the same “Pollyanna” assumption: all dinners on a meal tab are: a) purchasing meals and drinks that are similarly priced or; b) don’t care if one dinner subsidizes the overindulgence of another. If you are finically well off enough not mind that your dinning buddies are taking advantage of you, and your only concern is that you have given your wait staff the proper tip… then there is no need to bother with a more intelligent app like Separate Checks. For the rest of us… read on. Sure, Separate Checks can do the straight-forward tip calculation (before or after tax) and check splitting of its less capably rivals (using the “Quick Split” option, so if that is all you want, no need to look elsewhere) but it can do much more. It is quite possible to split even the most complicated checks exactly (even dividing single items shared by several dinners). Some reviewers have found this overly tedious, but the option to do this is yours. When dinning with large groups, I frequently use this option just to calculate the exact tab for my wife and me, to insure that I contribute the proper amount to the pot. If another dinner doubts that I have done so, I can quickly demonstrate that I have. This has proved to be a great strategy! But perhaps the most useful and innovative feature of Separate Checks is its ability to quickly modify the “Quick Split” to achieve a more equitable split without getting too far into the weeds. Say each dinner has ordered meals that are roughly equivalent in price, and you would like to just split the check evenly. But wait, you are on a budget and just ordered water, while one of you friends ordered two beers! Normally that would negate the concept of splitting the check equally (unless you wanted to subsidize your friend’s drinking habit!) but “Quick Split” has a feature which allows you to easily add the price of the beers to one tab, while automatically subtracting it from the others! Conversely, if everyone ordered a beer but you, you could deduct the amount from your tab. This works very well. Bottom line, dividing a check when you are out with friends should not be an onerous task. You want to insure that your wait staff receives a fair tip, and that each dinner contributes their proper share. Separate Checks handles that better than another similar app I have used.

This is the best detailed check splitter in the APP store . . . If you want elegant control of paying a check when diners are very money conscious . . . and some have champagne tastes and huge appetites. This APP will maintain friendship between a gourmand and an anorexic. Developer: Thanks for continuing APP updates after such a long interim and fixing that deal-busting text entry bug. Now, naming items and tabs is effortless and is the reason this APP is the best. Although some may find Separate Checks overly complicated, the APP does simplify detailed check splitting as much as possible. Please keep up the good work.

I love this app!! I dine out a great deal and this app makes it exact when it comes time to pay your share. Theyve included everything in the calculations, even different taxes for food & alcohol. The customer service is unbelievable. I got a response almost immediately to an issue I was having. Keep up the great work!

In my many years of searching for a quick and easy tip and tax calculator, I finally obtained the holy grail with this one. I know very few people who want to get roped into splitting a check evenly. I know even fewer who want to take the responsibility for dividing up that restaurant check fairly. Separate Checks handles both these issues easily and gracefully. This is a five star app despite its lack of an iOS 7 interface. This one goes on my home screen.
